2011 Bioneers Conference
2011 Bioneers Conference
The Center for Ecoliteracy will present twice at the 2011 Bioneers Conference on Friday, October 14.
MORNING PLENARY ADDRESS BY KAREN BROWN
Center for Ecoliteracy creative director Karen Brown will address "Revolutionizing K–12 Education with Sustainability in Mind" during the Friday morning plenary sessions.
There is a vital movement preparing today’s young people for the ecological challenges of the coming decades. “Smart by Nature” education reveals the keys to sustainable living, revitalizes schooling, and points the way to a hopeful future. Karen Brown will showcase some of the most inspiring and ingenious examples of Smart by Nature schooling from around the country, and will reveal the guiding principles that can transform schooling in any environment.
AFTERNOON WORKSHOP (4:30–6:00): TEACHING SUSTAINABLE LIVING THROUGH FOOD
One thing we share with each other and all living things is the daily need for nourishment. Food offers a lens through which K-12 students can learn about the web of ecological relationships deeply rooted in soil and sun.
The Center for Ecoliteracy (CEL) and Nourish/WorldLink will lead an interactive dialogue and showcase inspiring resources for teachers, including the beautiful film Nourish: Food + Community and its engaging companion curriculum, which explore the story of our food and its impact on the health of people and the Earth.
Participants will receive copies of the Curriculum Guide (developed by CEL for Nourish) and Big Ideas: Linking Food, Culture, Health, and Environment, a K-12 conceptual framework for teaching about food and food systems. We will also share the revised Rethinking School Lunch Guide and additional resources.
